Microsoft has fired two employees, Abtihal Abusaud and Vanya Agarwal, who protested the company's 50th anniversary celebration for providing artificial intelligence technology to the Israeli military and spoke out in favor of the Palestinians, according to a group representing the workers.
Microsoft accused the employee of misconduct in a termination letter on Monday, saying that "Abtihal Abusaad mismanaged the company's 50th anniversary celebration and damaged the company's reputation. And disrupted the event." Microsoft says another employee, Vanya Agarwal, had already announced her resignation, but the company ordered her to leave the office five days early on Monday.
The protests began on Friday when Microsoft software engineer Abtihal Abusaad walked up to a stage where an executive was introducing new artificial intelligence products and Microsoft was announcing a long-term vision for its new AI project.
Abusaad shouted at Microsoft CEO Mustafa Suleiman, saying, “You claim you are launching an AI future, but Microsoft sells AI weapons to the Israeli military.” “And in Palestine, 50,000 people have died and Microsoft is helping to perpetrate this genocide in our region.” The protest forced Suleiman to stop speaking while it was being broadcast live from Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, Washington. Attendees at the 50th anniversary of Microsoft’s founding included co-founder Bill Gates and former CEO Steve Ballmer.
As the protest unfolded and the video went viral, the company faced international backlash.
